CrossOver would like to extend our thanks to two foundations who have recently joined us in our mission to provide compassionate health care for the neediest in our community.
If you've visited any of the CrossOver clinics, you have probably witnessed what could only be described as a sea of humanity--overcrowded waiting rooms, patients being screened for services in corners of the hallways, physicians waiting for exam rooms to become available in order to treat patients and multiple staff members and volunteers sharing spaces meant for one person. With a grant from The Beirne Carter Foundation, CrossOver is able to make changes to its physical space in order to accomodate this exponential growth.
The expansion of the West End clinic will allow twice the number of patients to be seen at a time. The clinic will have double the exam rooms, an extra dental chair and the addition of an ophthalmology screening room. For the first time, there will be space for a designated patient screening room and a break/conference room for employees and volunteers. In addition, CrossOver's administrative offices have been relocated to the West End. With the extra space, the Cowardin clinic will gain additional exam and counseling rooms to accommodate the client growth.
A dedicated Women's Health clinic at the West End is being funded with a grant from the Susan G. Komen Foundation. In conjunction with the Every Woman's Life and Wise Woman program, the new program seeks to improve access to breast health services for low-income uninsured women. Over 70% of our client base is female and we have seen a significant increase in the number of younger women who are coming to us with advanced stage cancer. Through our patient centered medical home, we will be able to provide not only treatment for the most emergent condition but also make sure that the whole patient is treated including other chronic conditions which may affect their health. Because our patients are fighting everyday to pay the bills, keep their families together and to keep their jobs, this program is designed to accommodate them by providing services during traditionally non-working hours. Beginning January 12, 2011, the clinic will be open from 5:00-8:00 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month.
